Boost Pedals A volume boost pedal is a seemingly simple thing, yet finding one that actually retains the sound and feel of your instrument while delivering that extra punch needed for soloing is much more difficult than it ought to be. I've tried many of the boosts out there and then built many different circuits before arriving at a Mosfet based boost that is clean, even at high volume levels, and nearly transparent while still adding just a touch of warmth, sparkle and punch.
The result is my BlueMoose Boost. Available currently only in an MXR (1290NS) sized enclosure (miniaturization is coming soon). The standard model is a boost-only pedal, the lowest gain setting is unity. For a small additional fee the circuit can be modified to act as a cut as well as a boost. The pedal can be powered by a 9V battery or the DC input. Introductory price: $75.00 Cut modification: add $10
. . Great players such as Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi and Brian May knew that the Dallas Rangemaster treble boost offered a way for their guitar to cut through the mix in a way they could not achieve with an amp alone. Unlike other treble boosters, the original germanium Rangemaster has a sweet sound, cutting but not overly harsh or shrill. Using one of my treble boosters evokes those bright, lo-fi tones from those great old records of the 60'sand 70's. My version of the Rangemaster, the MooseMaster, uses period correct NOS germanium transistors, both the original OC44 metal can and the glass OC71. These two transistors require a positive ground, meaning you must power them by battery or from a power supply with completely isolated outputs such as the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus. I also offer the germanium OC140 transistor with a negative ground so that it can be used with any standard power supply. As an added bonus, I have added my own modification to MooseMaster, a switch that selects between the original circuit and a more full range mid boost setting.
